How did Europe go from being Christian to a godless society?

Europe at one time was fully Christian. All nations were Catholic. Many saints walked the face of the earth during the middle ages.

Now Europe is a godless society. Even the Catholic Church no longer follows it’s own teachings and practices as it once did.

What happened to Christendom in Europe?

At no time was Europe fully Christian. There have been Jews, and pagans in Europe before Christianity came along, and they continue there today. The Muslims came later, many are still there too.

Not all nations were catholic, many were and still are Orthodox.

Europe is not godless. Have you ever been there? There are plenty of religious folks there in every country.

  5. Depends on your definition of Godless..
Anyone of any faith has a God, so in fact, Europe could be very God "full"… Just that they dont believe the way "you" believe..
Everyone has a right to think that their faith is the best.. Who are you or I to say "mine" is the best….

Oh yeah. The middle ages where such a great time to live in Europe . . .
    (I lied.)

If godlessness causes a higher standard of living, then I’d like some more. Everywhere.

That alone is a good enough reason.

You see through the middle ages and up until some more recent history; the Pope, and the Church had a HUGE influence over Europe. They were corrupt, and they had some authority that governments didn’t.

Ironically enough the United States was the first fully secular government in a sense, since they completely separated church and state.

Seriously it’s a wonder that they didn’t stop it sooner.
And this is coming from a semi-theist.

Christianity is largely incompatible with science. And the Catholic Church hasn’t followed its own teaching for centuries.

They opted to retreat from the Lord’s Army.

    The Armor of God
10Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 18And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.

There are still many christians in Europe, not as many as once was but multicultural societies have been introduced to Europe in vast amounts and that includes their beliefs and opinions. I live in England and there is still many churches and ”God fearing people” just a lot who don’t buy it, when compared to previous generations who were in many cases forced by society to believe in christianity.

I personally found religion to be a trap of control (in my honest opinion) this does not mean i live a ”bad” life style far from the contrary. I am a peaceful man who follows the common law of the land (God given rights or Birth rights depending if you are religious or not, i am not so i follow my birth rights) and they were introduced and have been the law of the land since 1215 The Magna Carta. (When everyone was a christian in England and virtually all of Europe)

When these ”Saints” were walking the Earth, the bible was virtually law in all of Europe. To openly not believe in God would have been suicide, to believe in another God would mean your whole Family could be liable for ”Devil worshiping”

  18. Yes, we were all Christians once… on pain of death.

Most of us realised the non-reality of God over centuries of wars with the same god on both sides where all the poor got killed and the rich got land, wealth, power, large amounts of cash and crown put on their head by the Pope.

After the fall of the HRE in 1809 and to a greater extent after WW1 we preferred education and democracy over indoctrination and theocracy.

In my view the USA is the closest thing to the HRE on the planet at the moment, a pseudo democracy ruled by unelected religiously oriented organisations that are basically atheist at the head.
Ruling the masses by myth and fantasy is neither fair, progressive or democratic, but it serves the rich and powerful very well indeed.

@ sudonym x … you are right of course and I speak mainly for western Europe, but East and West were both parts of the same Roman Empire in essence.
There were always Jews in Europe, many were killed as passing troops went on their way to the Crusades, for practice basically.
Islam melded into Iberia for a few hundred years, supported and run by the Jews often enough and for a while they got quite a way up into France and at least one Kingdom in southern France was ostensibly Jewish.
It was wiped out in a Crusade of course just like the Cathars.
